Overview
The Serengeti is one of the most renowned wildlife reserves in the world, located in northern Tanzania and extending into southwestern Kenya. It spans about 30,000 square kilometers (12,000 square miles) and is famous for its vast savannas, diverse ecosystems, and abundant wildlife, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Serengeti is best known for the **Great Migration**, an annual movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of zebras, and other grazers as they search for fresh pastures. This spectacular event, often called one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of Africa,” also attracts predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, and crocodiles.
The park is home to the “Big Five” — lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos — along with more than 500 bird species and diverse flora. Its open plains, acacia woodlands, and riverine forests create a dynamic landscape, supporting both migratory and resident wildlife populations.
The Serengeti is a key destination for safaris and wildlife photography, embodying the quintessential African wilderness.
